Executive bullet points for fast decision-making
- ✓ Missing and delayed are different problems: missing is permissions, delayed is battery management.
- ✓ On Android, the manufacturer's own power manager overrides Android's settings — check both.
- ✓ On iPhone, Focus modes and notification summary are the usual cause of silent delivery.
- ✓ Check the per-chat mute before rebuilding your whole notification setup.
Sort the symptom first — the fixes do not overlap.
- Nothing appears at all → permissions or mute.
- Appears, but silently → channel settings or Focus mode.
- Appears late, in a batch when you open the app → background execution and battery management.
Three checks that fix most cases#
- Is the chat muted? Open the conversation, tap the name, check notification settings for that chat. Mutes set for a year are forgotten within a week.
- Are app notifications enabled? Android: Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Notifications. iPhone: Settings → Notifications → WhatsApp → Allow Notifications.
- Is a Do Not Disturb or Focus mode active? Including scheduled ones you set up months ago.
Android#
Notification permissions and channels. Android splits WhatsApp's notifications into channels — Messages, Groups, Calls, and others. A channel can be disabled or silenced individually while the app-level toggle stays on. Check each channel, and confirm importance is set high enough to pop on screen.
Battery optimisation. Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Battery → Unrestricted. Optimised or Restricted means Android may stop WhatsApp receiving in the background, which produces the classic "messages arrive only when I open the app" pattern.
Manufacturer power management. This is the one that catches everybody, because it sits on top of Android's own settings and is not visible from them:
| Brand | Where to look |
|---|---|
| Xiaomi / Redmi / POCO | Security app → Permissions → Autostart, plus Battery saver → No restrictions |
| Samsung | Device care → Battery → Background usage limits → remove from Sleeping and Deep sleeping apps |
| Oppo / Realme / OnePlus | Battery → App battery management → Allow background activity, disable Sleep standby optimisation |
| Vivo / iQOO | Battery → High background power consumption → allow WhatsApp |
| Huawei / Honor | Battery → App launch → set WhatsApp to Manage manually, all three toggles on |
Data restrictions. Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Mobile data → allow background data and unrestricted data usage. Data Saver at system level does the same damage.
Notification history. If you suspect notifications are appearing and vanishing, enable Notification history in Android's notification settings and check whether they arrived at all.
iPhone#
Notification settings. Settings → Notifications → WhatsApp: Allow Notifications on, Lock Screen / Notification Centre / Banners enabled, Sounds on, and Show Previews set to your preference.
Focus modes. Settings → Focus. Check every mode, including Sleep and Work, and add WhatsApp to Allowed Notifications where you want it through. A schedule left on from a holiday is a common cause.
Scheduled Summary. Settings → Notifications → Scheduled Summary. If WhatsApp is included there, its notifications are held and delivered in batches — which reads exactly like "delayed notifications".
Background App Refresh. Settings → General → Background App Refresh → on, and enabled for WhatsApp.
Low Power Mode. Reduces background activity and delays pushes. If notifications are reliable when charging and unreliable at 15% battery, this is why.
Notification grouping can hide individual messages inside a stack. Settings → Notifications → WhatsApp → Notification Grouping → Off if you want each one visible.
Delayed rather than missing#
If everything arrives, just late and in a burst when you unlock the phone, stop looking at notification settings — the cause is background execution:
- Battery optimisation or manufacturer power management (Android).
- Low Power Mode or Background App Refresh (iOS).
- A poor mobile data connection where push cannot be delivered until the device reconnects.
- Aggressive VPN or firewall apps interfering with push delivery.
Desktop and Business app notes#
- WhatsApp Web / desktop notifications need the browser's own permission, and the OS may separately suppress them. Check both, plus your operating system's focus assistant.
- WhatsApp Business app has the same notification structure with extra channels. If your business number is on someone's personal phone, its notifications compete with everything else on that device — which is a workflow problem, not a settings problem. Running one number across a team covers the alternative.
Last resorts, in order#
- Force stop, then reopen.
- Restart the phone.
- Update WhatsApp and the OS.
- Toggle notifications off and on to rebuild the channels.
- Reinstall — only after confirming a current backup, since this is how notification problems turn into data-loss problems.
If missed messages are costing you customers rather than annoying you, the fix is a system that assigns and escalates rather than a phone that buzzes louder. See how a shared WhatsApp inbox handles it.

Frequently asked questions
Why are my WhatsApp notifications not showing? +
Either notifications are disabled for the app or one of its channels, the chat is muted, or the phone's battery management is stopping WhatsApp running in the background.
Why are WhatsApp notifications delayed on iPhone? +
Usually Low Power Mode, Background App Refresh being off, or a Focus mode delivering the notification quietly. Delayed rather than missing almost always points at power or focus settings.
How do I turn on WhatsApp notifications on Android? +
Settings, then Apps, then WhatsApp, then Notifications — enable the app and each channel you care about, especially Messages and Groups. Then set the app's battery usage to Unrestricted.
Why does WhatsApp not notify me for one contact? +
That chat is muted, or has custom notification settings. Open the chat, tap the contact name, and check the notifications section for that conversation specifically.
